Absence of work can be due to Sickness or non-sickness Absenteeism (where employees fail to turn up for work without a legitimate reason). Workplace wellbeing and level of employee engagement are key components of absenteeism  representing a significant business cost estimated to be in excess of £17bn for the UK .
Engaged employees have less absenteeism (not due to illness)  averaging 2.69 days/year in the UK compared to the disengaged employee who takes on average 6.19 days/year . Organisationally, this is highly significant as research identified those with employee engagement in the top quartile have 37% less absenteeism, which contribute 12% higher customer metrics, 18% higher productivity, and 16% higher profitability than business units in the bottom quartile .
A similar pattern also exists for absence directly due to sickness. Highly engaged missed 43% fewer days of work due to illness compared to the disengaged employees .
